Network Engineer (Fixed Wireless).
When a customer on West 88th Street loses service, the cause could be a misaligned rooftop radio, a sector that filled up, a transport fault, or a route that stopped being advertised. Here the same person chases all four. ConnectNYC runs its own Tarana radios, its own Juniper switching and routing, its own IP space, and leased dark fiber it lights in-house. There is no vendor to blame and no resold circuit to wait on. The network is live in occupied apartment buildings, where people notice a bad hour immediately. The operation is small enough that the hard problem stops with you. Part of the job is on a roof, on a ladder, with hand tools, in weather. If you want a seat where RF is another department’s concern, this is not it.

Pay: $70,000–$110,000 per year
What you do
- Configure, align, and maintain Tarana fixed-wireless radios on rooftops and inside buildings, and fix links that degrade.
- Build and troubleshoot Juniper switching and routing across the network.
- Run BGP: peering sessions, upstream transit, and the announcement of the company’s own IP space.
- Turn up and monitor leased dark fiber the company lights in-house.
- Watch how sectors, links, and sites perform over time, and add capacity before a site runs hot.
- Take an outage from the first report to a cause you can name, then to a fix that holds.
- Carry a share of the on-call rotation, including nights and weekends.
What you bring
- Configure Juniper switches and routers from the command line.
- Run BGP in production: bring up a peering session, read a routing table, and find why a prefix is not where it should be.
- Plan and manage IPv4 and IPv6 addressing for a network that is carrying customers right now.
- Reason across RF, transport, switching, and routing as one path rather than four separate systems.
- Work on rooftops and in building risers, on a ladder, with hand tools, in weather.
- Troubleshoot under pressure, then explain plainly what failed and why.
What success looks like
- Capacity gets added because you read the trend, not because a customer opened a ticket about a full sector.
- Every outage ends with a cause you can state in one sentence and a change that keeps it from coming back.
- Routing changes are deliberate. You can say what is advertised, to whom, and what breaks if it goes away.
- A year in, you can stand on a roof and look at a radio you aligned, then open a terminal and trace the path from it to the edge. Both ends are yours.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday through Friday during business hours, with a shared on-call rotation covering nights and weekends. Site work is scheduled during the day; outages are handled when they happen.
